The month of November brings the international ensemble Toby Foyeh and Orchestra Africa to the Fayetteville State campus. This multi-faceted ensemble performs music created out of a unique fusion of traditional Nigerian Yoruba, Highlife, Afrobeat, Latin, and elements of folklore with jazz, rock, and pop. Toby Foyeh composes, arranges, produces the band's music, and sings with the backing female singer-dancers. The band features traditional African instruments such as Gangan (Talking Drum), Kalimba (Thumb Piano), assorted percussion, flutes, guitars, keyboards synthesizers, male and female leads, and chorus vocals. Their music expresses social situations in Africa, the people, their joys and pains spirits, mountains, rivers, forests, and animals. Toby Foyeh is an established artist in Nigeria with hit singles "Ore mi" and "I'm on Fire".
They will also perform a three-part master class dealing with African dance, African history, and African music on Saturday, November 18.

Despite the project's enormity, the workers who are building the freeway are barely noticed by drivers who roll by endlessly. This documentary introduces us to the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Mexico, home to an indigenous Zapotec society where gender and sexual preference are a fluid concept. The women dominate the home and businesses, while the men do much of the heavy hauling and seem happy to let women rule. The matriarchy also fosters the area’s progressive politics, which include standing up to the PRI and warding off the global market. 74 minutes. English. 2000.
2:20pm-2:50pm -- Ajayu (Bolivia) -- Director: Francisco Ormachea G. Death in the Aymara culture is an experience in which the mourners, the community, the souls participate together. Age-old rituals, mixed with Catholic symbols assimilated by the people, frame the story of Andres and his young daughter Leonora. Upon drowning in Lake Titikaka, they must find their way to Korimarca (the Aymara Heaven) with help from the members of the community to which they belonged Bolivia. 29 minutes. 3:00pm-4:00pm -- Radio Chanul Pom, From the Heart of the Highlands of Chiapas (Mexico) -- Introduction and Discussion with Indigenous filmmaker Jose Alfredo Jimenez. Director: Jose Alfredo Jiminez (Maya). From the heart of the Altos in the Chiapaneco province of Chenalho, this community and indigenous oriented radio station broadcasts in Tzotzil and Tzeltal. The radio is an effort to strengthen their fight for justice and defend their culture and dialect. This documentary will take us on a journey through the Chiapas mountains with indigenous voices. 19 min. In Spanish, Tzeltzal, Tzotzil with English subtitles. 2005.

The old man takes her to a field and teaches her that she doesn’t need an instrument to play and appreciate music. The man shows the girl that music is all around her in nature. 15 min.
**La tarde de un matrimonio de la clase media (Mexico) -- Director: Fernando León. A man and his wife are sitting in their living room. The wife is knitting; the man is reading the newspaper. When the wife wants to start a conversation, the husband tells her to shut her mouth. 4 min.
**Adios Mamá (Mexico) -- Director: Ariel Gordon. A lady sees a man in the grocery store and tells him that he looks exactly like her son. She tells him that her son is dead and asks him to call her mama. She then leaves and doesn’t pay for her things. She turns and says goodbye to him, making sure that the cashier hears him call her mama. The man gets charged for the woman’s things because the cashier thought she was the man’s mother. 7 min.
**El Sístole Diástole (Mexico) -- Director: Carlos Cuarón. A girl and her grandfather are playing a game of cards in the parke. What is being played in the game, is actually happening in real life to the rest of their family. At the end, the grandfather, who never speaks, speaks and the family wins the lottery. 22 min.
7:00pm -- Soplo de Vida/Breath of Life (Colombia) -- Introduction by Juan Ricardo Aparicio. Director: Luis Ospina. Ex-cop turned private eye, Fernando Solórzano gets roped into investigating the murder of unidentified hooker Flora Martínez at a cheap Bogotá hotel. As the flashbacks unreel in classic film noir fashion, he starts to piece together her life through her relationships with a failed boxer, a blind lottery salesman, a cowardly bullfighter and a corrupt politician. 110 minutes, Spanish with English subtitles. 1999. This documentary portrays the lives of Chile’s estimated 15 ­ 20,000 Romanies (Gypsies) by documenting the stories of three families and their everyday struggles to reconcile their traditional culture with the advantages offered by cultural assimilation. The film brings us into the families’ homes, their places of worship, the children’s schools, and the markets where the men trade, where the protagonists speak, in the Romani language as well as Spanish, about their lives and their concerns as Chileans and as Romanies. 62 minutes. 4:10pm-5:30pm -- Si Sos Brujo, Una Historia De Tango-Si Sos Brujo, A Tango Story (Argentina) -- North Carolina Premier. Director: Caroline Neal. With the old maestros of the tango on the verge of dying off, a young musician, Ignacio Varchausky, forms the Tango School Orchestra to ensure that the true spirit of the music is passed on to the next generation. Caroline Neal’s engaging film documents the effort of Ignacio and Emilio Balcarce, a retired legendary violinist, bandoneonista and composer, and the music that ensued. Emilio collaborates with notable figures such as Pepe Libertella, Raúl Garello, Néstor Marconi and Ernesto Franco, amongst many more. 79 minutes. Spanish with English subtitles. 2005.

C4 (Latino Rock)
C4 is the name of the premiere Latino Rock band in the Triangle area of North Carolina. It features current members of the Latin music orchestra Samecumba, as well as ex-members of local Spanish Rock bands "Letal" and "Punto Cinco." C4 specializes in playing Ska, Pop Rock, Heavy Metal, Calypso, Soca, Punk and Reggae music in Spanish. Some of the bands they cover are Desorden Publico, Soda Stereo, Juanes, Los Enanitos Verdes, Seguridad Social, La Mosca Tse Tse, Mana, Hombres G, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs and others. www.c4rock.net

Saludos Compay is a local trio that plays traditional as well as contemporary and original Latin American music. On lead vocals and guitar is Pablo Valencia. The group performs a number of Valencia's original compositions which range in style from reggae to rumba. Erich Lieth plays keyboards and spices the strong Latin rhythm patterns with solos, borrowing from the jazz/blues/pop improvisational piano that he plays in area bars and restaurants. Chuck Nolan, lead percussionist, intricately weaves the rhythms, be it for a subtle bossa nova or a danceable guajira. This versatile trio keeps toes tapping. CONTACT INFO: erich@erichlieth.com.
